An open letter from Community United Methodist Church - Casselberry to District Superintendent Stiggins and Bishop Whitaker

We, the congregation of Community United Methodist Church - Casselberry, send this letter to voice our strong opposition to the use of the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center for the Reconciling Ministries national conference "Hearts on Fire."

The invitation to "Hearts on Fire" found on the Reconciling Ministries Network website announces: "Come to the Reconciling Convocation! We hope to gather 400 UMs who will envision the United Methodist Church truly opening itself to the gifts and graces of the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) community."

We completely support the United Methodist Church truly opening itself to the gifts and graces of all who wish to attend our churches. We believe that everyone is a Child of God and, therefore, a person of worth who should be welcomed in our midst.

We do believe that each of us is a sinner and, through the Grace of God and the acceptance of Jesus Christ as our personal savior, we are forgiven of our sins.

We believe that the church should be actively supporting ministries that give hope to all sinners.

We also believe in the concept that the United Methodist Church holds its leaders and particularly its ordained ministers to higher standards and that there are some sins that cause one to forfeit the right to leadership roles in the church.

In support of that concept, we strongly oppose letting an organization whose agenda is not representative of the scriptures use the Lake Junaluska Center. The mission statement of the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) states that RMN "is a national grassroots organization that exists to enable full participation of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in the life of the United Methodist Church, both in policy and practice." Part of the agenda of RMN is to support the ordination of persons from the LGBT community. We are strongly opposed to that ordination.

As we face these troubling times, we join others in prayer that God will give us loving and understanding hearts.
