Mission… Drama? In a church? Sad, obnoxious, slow, exhausted, happy, self-conscious, terrified, fearless, confident, cool, arrogant, confused, giddy, agitated, disoriented, concerned, defiant, defiled, disgusted, optimistic, pessimistic, nauseated, nervous, bored, embarrassed, ambitious, insignificant, choked up, funny, angry, used, intrigued, awed, hurt, nosey, left out, let down, empty, paranoid, carefree, calm, hyper, unappreciated, unimportant. Ever feel any of these emotions? Of course you have and chances are people that are in our congregation or audience have felt these, too. Our goal is to connect with people on whatever level they are at. Drama is an ancient form of communication that opens our eyes in a way that is truly unique. Good drama can bring out laughter or move us deeply. It can touch hearts and help us to be more open to the presence of God. Who likes cheese anyway? Many church skits can tend to go straight to the “Bible answers” and come across as very unrealistic. Let’s be honest—we don’t generally say to our neighbor, “The Bible says, ‘Thou shall not covet they neighbor’s donkey.’ So my friend, find contentment in what you have.” However, we might say, “I know it’s tough to look around at what other people have and not get wrapped up in wanting the same things. Sometimes life seems unfair that way. You know what? I’ve just had to come to the realization that I have everything I need, and I’m not going to worry about trying to keep up with everyone else.” The “churchy” response is often the most unrealistic response for audience members, especially those who may not be Christians. It is not always necessary in every performance to lay out the Four Spiritual Laws and have an altar call.
